Makey Bakey Heart
Patrice Reilly – Owner Makey Bakey Heart
(Gluten, Wheat and Dairy Free Bakery)
As someone who has coeliacs disease and a dairy intolerance, shopping for suitable food or eating out is no easy task. Being a bit of a foodie I started making my own baked treats and grew increasingly frustrated with cafes and restaurants that don’t cater for gluten or dairy intolerances. Like a lot of coeliacs I also recognised that much of the ‘free from’ food on offer in shops or cafes is very dry and uninspired. I decided to do something about it.
I visited the ‘Go for it’ website many times before I finally plucked up the courage to make contact.
I signed up to the Regional Start Initiative provided by LEDCOM. Through a series of meetings with a LEDCOM Business Advisor we developed a business plan and discussed advertising, financing and all things Makey Bakey Heart! I gained a lot of confidence in my ideas and products through this process and by the end of the programme I was ready to take my first steps in running my own business.
I currently run 2 stalls (Fairhill, Ballymena & Victoria Square, Belfast) selling exclusively gluten, wheat and dairy free food. The stalls have been an excellent way to test my products and develop a customer base. I also supply a few cafes in Belfast and Larne with baked goodies and I am working on a range of cakes and treats for cafes/restaurants and retail, with the help of an Invest NI Innovation Voucher.
Most recently, I have moved my business into dedicated premises at LEDCOM Industrial Estate, Larne. My new kitchen at LEDCOM is completely gluten and dairy free which is reassuring for my customers and most importantly it’s affordable and comes with valuable onsite support from the staff at LEDCOM. I have plenty of plans for the future of the business and I know that I can count on Invest NI and the staff at LEDCOM for advice and guidance in making the most of my business.

Respond Healthcare moved in to Unit 57 Ledcom Industrial Estate in 2007 after outgrowing our previous units in Ledcom where we operated out of happily from 1993. The move to Unit 57 was seamless and easily monitored and maneuvered by the Ledcom staff.
During the past 11 years we found Unit 57 an excellent place to run our business out from. The building itself is sound and was maintained well by Ledcom. We found all required services easily fitted well in to the premises and during our time Respond made regular updates to ensure modern facilities were maintained in the unit. The location on the bank road was very convenient and allowed customers and deliveries to be easily directed to our site from either side of the town. Ledcom estate itself was also easily accessible by such and with very spacious grounds that were made suitable throughout the year and throughout various weather conditions.
Over the years we found the Ledcom staff very accessible and accommodating to all requests. Their friendly customer service made them a pleasure to deal with and during our time the staff at Respond built very good relationships with them. They were always quick to respond and great at following up whenever required.
